Lviv oblast is situated in Western Ukraine. It was formed in 1939. In 1959 it merged with Drohobych oblast. It borders on Ternopil oblast, Volyn’ oblast, Rivne oblast, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Zakarpattya (Transcarpathian) oblast, and has a part of the state border with Poland.
