Berezhany (a town, regional centre) in the west-east of Ternopil oblast.
Berezhany was first mentioned as a village that belonged to Anna from Lytvynov in 1375.
In 1445 Berezhany was alreade a private town on Lviv land (Lviv region).
On march 19, 1530 Berezhany received the Magdeburg right that enforced it to be a European town.
The building of the castle was started in 1534. The original form was that of a pentagon, surrounded by fortifications of 16 meters height. The castle was built in 1554.
During XVI-XVII centuries Berezhany was attacked and destroyed many times.
In the times of Austrian and Hungarian Empire Berezhany was a regional centre. It remained so in the Soviet times and is true today.
The modern emblem of Berezhany was approved in 1995, and is based on its historical predecessors.
