Ternopil is an oblast centre. (1540)
It’s also famous abroad with under the names “Tarnopole” (“Тarnopolie”).
In 1548 the new town received the Magdeburg Right and emblem.
In the times of Austrian and Hungarian Empire Ternopil was a regional centre. Since November 1918 to January 2, 1919 р. Ternopil was the capital of Western Ukrainian People’s Republic. (ZUNR) In June of 1919 Ternopil was occupated by the Polish army. Since December 1939 it has been a regional centre of USSR, and now it’s the regional centre of Ukraine.
