Zbarazh is the centre of Zbarazh region.
Zbarazh was first mentioned in Xth century in the manuscript by the Polish author Prokosh.
The old castle was mentione in 1211 also in manuscripts.
Zbarazh was not found by the aristocratic family of Zbarazki, and didn’t get the name from them. it’s quite the opposite.
The family emblem was St. George killing the dragon. It remained so as the emblem of the town till nowadays.
Obviously, it was in 1612 in Venice where Christopher Zbrarazky got acquainted with famous architect Vincenzo Skamozzi (1552-1616) and hired him to make a project of a new castle. The building started about 1620 and lasted for almost 8 years.
In 1649 B. Khmelnytsky’s army got the castle in the war.
Zbarazh gradually became a small town, and now is a one in Ternopil oblast.
It’s close to Ternopil, about 20 kilometres to the North, and is a popular tourist site, especially for tourists from Poland, since the castle and the town was also the part of their history.
The castle as you can see is in excellent condition. It’s being rennovated, and looks better and better every time you visit it.
